Venus is Furs is a new twist on a classic Kentucky cocktail called the Sealbach. Watch Lino, from Upstairs on the Square make this complex, sophisticated cocktail with layered flavors and a nice kick from the champagne bubbles. Serve this one with flair. Bring to the table and top it off with the champagne right when served.

About Augusto Lino

"Lino," as his friends and loyal customers call him, is originally from Brazil and came to New York City several years ago before settling in the Boston area as bar manager at UpStairs on the Square. Bringing back the classics and adding a twist to them as well is Lino's style. He does a great job of showing us how to make quality drinks the correct way and sharing some cocktail lore while he's at it. And look how snazzy he looks in his jacket and tie!

Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 oz bourbon
  • 3/4 oz Cointreau
  • 1/2 oz honey syrup (equal parts honey and water)
  • 1/4 oz lemon juice
  • few dashes Peychaud's bitters
  • 1-1/4 oz champagne
  • orange zest to garnish

How-to

  1. Fill a pint glass with ice
  2. Pour in the bourbon, Cointreau, honey syrup, lemon juice and the bitters (which gives it that great color)
  3. Cover glass with a shaker and give the drink a good shake
  4. Strain into a chilled glass
  5. Top with champagne and garnish with fresh orange zest
