About Carla & Anamelia Arriaga

Carla and Anamelia are THE warmest and most delightful mother and daughter you will ever meet. Originally from Venezuela, Carla came to America to go to college for graphic design and never left. She now lives in Portland, Oregon, with her great husband Eugene. Anamelia and her husband Raul had a Venezuelan restaurant for several years in their homeland. Despite trying times in Venezuela, Anamelia still lives there with her husband where they now run a tea business called Camelia Casa de Te, which offers high quality loose teas, tea education to restaurants, and tea parties (how fun!). Both Carla and Anamelia are amazing cooks and we thank them for being kind enough to share their wonderful recipes with us. Everyone must make the Arepas!!!

Recipe

Ingredients

  • yellow cake (pick your favorite boxed cake OR make your own from scratch)
  • 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
  • 1 can (14 oz) condensed milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 pint whipping cream
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • cinnamon

How-to

Make The Cake

  1. Make the cake following box instructions. Preferably, bake it in a glass oven-proof baking dish
  2. Let the cake cool. Once the cake is cool, poke holes all over with a fork
  3. Mix evaporated milk, condensed milk and vanilla in a bowl. (Optional: Add 1/4 cup of rum)
  4. Pour the mixture on top of the cake, stopping halfway to make sure liquid is being absorbed into the cake
  5. Place in refrigerator and let cool about 1 hour

Make the Whipped Cream

  1. With a mixer, blend the whipping cream (add sugar gradually to taste) until it forms peaks

Finish the Tres Leches

  1. Top the cake with the whipped cream
  2. Sprinkle with cinnamon
  3. Refrigerate again before serving

Ran out of rum, instead I added Kahula. Everyone loved it. This recipe is a keeper! (Dec 1, 2008 4:46:41 PM)
