Pecans have an innate sweetness that makes for a great snack. Barbara Heiberg lightly toasts them stove-top in butter, garlic, black pepper, cayenne, salt and sugar to make them both sweet and savory. Once toasted, they're given a last-minute hand toss with sea salt and sugar. While this recipe offers salty, peppery and garlicky pecans, you can also try toasting them in butter and cinnamon and use peanuts or walnuts. Variety is the spice of life.
Notes
Barbara Heiberg explains that she "loves everything about food - reading about it, shopping for it, cooking it, eating it." Barbara's mother was a simple cook, which inspired her to start experimenting in the kitchen. She remembers attempting to achieve the perfect spaghetti sauce, but concluded that the best Italian dishes are learned only from Italian grandmothers! Barbara spent time living in England and traveled extensively throughout Europe, tasting new foods and gaining kitchen inspirations. Today, she lives with her husband in Massachusetts and passes her love of cooking to the children in her neighborhood. Barbara holds cooking classes in her kitchen, and helps the kids build recipes in a cookbook entitled, "Cooking With Barbara."
