Beverages Mexican Hot Chocolate

Mexican Hot Chocolate

The most interesting thing that I discovered about Mexican Hot Chocolate is that they don't use milk to make it. Alex told us that Mexicans drink hot chocolate like we drink coffee so they don't make it with milk. Intriguing. What also fascinated us about Mexican Hot Chocolate is the very cool gadget they use to make it. You'll have to watch the video to see how it's done though. We don't want to spoil the fun.

About Mexican Hot Chocolate

The most interesting thing that I discovered about Mexican Hot Chocolate is that they don't use milk to make it. About Alex Whitmore

Okay, let's admit it. He's cute and he makes chocolate. Taza chocolate's Co-Founder Alex runs the company by supporting direct trade (buying cocoa beans directly from small, organic farmer organizations), by being involved in Go Green!, a local green business association, and by donating bean chaff to Groundworks Somerville, a local community gardens organization. On top of that, he is kind enough to take the time to teach us all about the tradition of Oaxacan style hot chocolate.

Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2.75 oz (approximately 1/3 cup) Mexican style chocolate (Taza chocolate includes Mexican chocolate with cinnamon or almonds, perfect for this tasty beverage)
  • 16 oz water (just below boiling)

Special Equipment

  • molinillo (a Mexican whisk - any regular kitchen whisk will do but this one is so festive!)
  • pitcher for the hot chocolate

How-to

  1. Grate the chocolate
  2. Pour the water into the pitcher
  3. Pour the chocolate into the hot water
  4. Whisk and froth the hot chocolate
  5. Pour and serve!

I'm Hispanic (Mexican descent), and this is about as authentic as it gets. :) My mom makes it in a large pot, without the frothing, but only because she can't be bothered with it. Great vid! (Aug 13, 2008 8:40:23 PM)
