Dessert & Baked Goods » Orange-Honey Ice Cream
To make this sinfully sweet ice cream, Sara Walkovich begins by making a velvety orange custard base on the stove. You can complete this ice cream right at home with your counter-top ice cream makers. Switch up your ordinary flavors for something devilishly delcious, Orange-Honey Ice Cream!
Makes 3 cups
Ingredients
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1½ cups whole milk
- zest of 2 oranges
- ¾ cup sugar
- ½ cup honey
- 6 egg yolks
- juice of 2 oranges
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Special Equipment
- ice cream maker
How-to
- In a medium saucepan, bring the cream, milk, and orange zest to a boil over medium-low heat
- In a separate bowl, ribbon the egg yolks, sugar, and honey
- Once the cream mixture has boiled, remove from the heat and temper in the egg mixture. Bring back to heat and cook until the mixture has thickened enough to coat the back of a spoon (nappé stage). This should take about 5-6 minutes
- Remove from heat, stir in vanilla extract and orange juice
- Strain into a sealable container. Let cool, and chill in fridge overnight to let the flavors meld
- Spin in an ice cream machine according to manufacturer's instructions
- Transfer to a sealable container & freeze for at least 4 hours before serving
