Recently the how2heroes team was sitting around a campfire, well not really, more like a conference room table, to talk about our favorite things to cook on the campfire. We decided to join forces to create a special Campfire Edition of the newsletter for you featuring our favorite camping recipes and techniques. If you're headed to the woods this weekend or anytime soon, we hope you find these how2s handy.

How to Light a Campfire

Andrew grew up making campfires at Camp Thoreau so he was the perfect choice to show you how to get your camping party started. 3 key components are the key to success.

Cute Alert

Jason makes S'Mores with his daughter, Lily. What a team. Watch their perfect technique for toasty marshmallows and melty, gooey chocolate - the secret to perfect S'Mores. And here's another cute idea. Try Jason's spiffy egg technique he learned as a kid. We loved how the egg poaches in the orange rind and gives it a little citrus zing. Very cool!

Cooking with Pie Irons

Carolyn enlightened us with her favorite wedding gifts - pie irons. As you'll see in the video, you can make everything from mini pizzas to sweet pies in these hinged cast iron wonders. After watching the video, Lynne, being the gadget lover, had to have one (okay two). We have a feeling you might too.

Hobo Stew

Kelsey is from Seattle and well, it seems like they do things a bit differently out there. We were intrigued by her "Spit & Chew" recipe which allows utensil-less campers to just bite off the veggie and sausage (cooked) pieces you want for dinner and cook them over a fire in a tinfoil pouch. While Kelsey took the more genteel approach to making this dish, we like the idea of roughing it.

Grilled Corn

August is all about sweet, tender corn varieties like Butter & Sugar and Silver Queen (all white kernels - Lynne's personal favorite). While a quickly boiled batch is a treat in and of inself, Lynne likes to take advantage of her fresh herbs and love of butter (which has no season) to create an extra special herbed butter corn which can be made on the campfire or on the grill at home.
