Hot Buttered Rum


  • ¾ oz black strap rum (suggestion: Cruzan - an aged rum blended with molasses)
  • ¾ oz spiced rum (suggestions: Sailor Jerry - 92 proof, or Captain Morgan)
  • ½ oz simple syrup (3 parts sugar to 1 part water - recommend using raw or unprocessed sugar) or you can use honey
  • 3 oz hot water (option: can use hot cider instead)
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter
  • pinch of ground Sichuan pepper


  1. Start with a heated mug
  2. Add 3/4 oz black strap rum, 3/4 oz spiced rum and 1/2 oz simple syrup
  3. Add 3 oz hot water and stir to mix
  4. Drop in butter and allow it to dissolve as you drink the cocktail
  5. Top with ground Sichuan pepper and serve
